Restaurant Born - Lacquer Boxes
Restaurant Born commissioned the production of this elegant lacquer box that was drawn by artist with disability, Michelle Low and Singapore museum store, Supermama.
The lacquer box features Michelle’s digital artwork of the iconic and historic Jinrikisha station that the restaurant is housed in at the bustling junction of Neil Road and Tanjong Pagar Road. Born with a congenital heart condition and coupled with hearing impairment and limp length discrepancies, growing up for Michelle was never easy. Over the years, she found an interest in doodling and with the help of digital tools, she draws and creates works as a livelihood.

About Jinrikisha station
Built in 1903, the conserved building holds a storied past and once served as a central depot for one of the earliest public transportations in Singapore – rickshaws. Jinrikisha in Japanese translates to ‘human-powered vehicle’. Rickshaw operators worked hard and served an important and essential role in society. To Chef Zor Tan, the building represents a platform for hard work and dreams – a space to share his culinary philosophy, express his personal identity on the plate, and a stage to fulfil his aspirations.
Celebrating the Circle of Life
Restaurant Born celebrates the Circle of Life, a philosophy that fuses Chef Zor’s childhood memories, professional journey, and personal ideals into a unique dining experience that represents a buoyant expression of Chef Zor’s ‘best life’. Eventually, everything connects in the Circle of Life and Restaurant Born gives back to the community by supporting the talents and works of persons with disabilities.
These lacquer boxes retails for $99. You may purchase them at Restaurant Born at 1 Neil Rd, #01-01, Singapore 088804 or email jasmine.wu@restaurantborn.com
The production of this lacquer box was supported by i’mable Collective, an initiative by SG Enable to develop a viable market for quality merchandise made by persons with disabilities.
